The Problems to Solve

1 in 5 Australians experience mental ill-health each year, costing about $12 billion in lost productivity and sick leave. In New Zealand, the cost is $12 million, or 5% of GDP. Research shows that most workers (61.8%) will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, and nearly a quarter (22.3%) believe their workplace caused or worsened it.

Problems Identified for Workplace Mental Health Program:

  • Access: There is a significant gap between those who need mental health care and those who receive it.

  • Trust: Workers often prefer external mental health services due to concerns about privacy and stigma, leading to low program utilisation provided by their organisation (less than 3%).

  • Stigma : Mental health issues often go unnoticed, leading to delayed treatment. Stigma is a major barrier, causing people to wait at least 6 months or more before seeking help.
